Chanel Authentication: How to Spot Genuine Vintage Pieces
The market for counterfeit luxury goods is worth over £4 billion annually, and Chanel is one of the most copied brands in the world. If you're buying pre-loved or from an unfamiliar source, knowing how to check authenticity can save you from an expensive mistake.
1. The Serial Number and Card
Chanel bags have come with serial stickers and authenticity cards since the mid-1980s. The number on the sticker (inside the bag) should match the card exactly.
Note: The presence of a card alone doesn't guarantee authenticity — cards are faked too. But mismatched or missing numbers are a red flag.
2. Stitching Quality
Authentic Chanel quilting has 10–12 stitches per inch. Counterfeits often have fewer (8 or less) because tighter stitching requires better leather and more labour. The pattern should also align perfectly at seams.
3. Hardware Details
The CC logo lock should feel weighty, not hollow. Engravings should be clean and sharp, not stamped shallowly. On classic flaps, the back of the lock plate has CHANEL and PARIS engraved, with even spacing and crisp lettering.
4. Leather and Lining
Lambskin should feel buttery and smell of quality leather, not chemicals. Caviar leather has a distinct pebbled grain. The lining — usually burgundy or black — should sit smoothly without bubbling or pulling.
5. The Chain
Authentic chains are heavy, with smooth links that don't catch or kink. Leather-woven sections should have even stitching and no glue residue.
